What is respite care?
Respite care is temporary care that gives a regular family caregiver a break. It may take place at home, in an adult day program, or in a residential setting, depending on the person’s needs and the services available. The National Institute on Aging explains these respite care options.
Why plan a caregiving break?
Family caregiving often needs to fit around work, appointments, household responsibilities, and time with other family members. Planning support in advance gives you an opportunity to discuss who will help, what they will do, and when they will be present. You do not need to wait for a particular season to explore your options.
Prepare a clear handover
Before arranging a break, write down the everyday support your loved one needs. A short list can make conversations with relatives or a care provider more useful.
- Which daily routines or household tasks need assistance?
- What preferences, interests, and communication needs should another caregiver know?
- What dates and times are you considering?
- Who will coordinate scheduling and answer questions while you are away?
If clinical care is required, discuss it with the treating health care professionals and confirm that the provider has the appropriate services and qualifications. Personal care, companionship, and nursing are different types of support; ask exactly what is included before making arrangements.
Questions to ask a respite care provider
- Are caregivers available for the dates and hours we need?
- Which tasks can the caregiver support, and which are outside the service?
- What screening, experience, and qualifications apply?
- What are the costs, scheduling requirements, and cancellation terms?
- How can the family share feedback or discuss changes in needs?
